Arriving at Lexia’s house, Alice walked into the main living area to find Lincoln—now wearing jeans—Caleb, and another man she’d not met yet talking.

“Lexia’s trying to settle Lola in bed,” Lincoln said, breaking away from the conversation for a second.

Since Alice knew nothing about children, let alone getting them to sleep, she chose to stay in the living room. She took a seat on the sofa. Leaning back, she closed her eyes and breathed through the pain she’d not allowed herself to fully feel.

“Alert everyone, but I don’t feel there is any need to increase patrols,” Lincoln ordered. “Did you hurt yourself?”

Alice opened her eyes, realizing Lincoln was talking to her. The other two had left, leaving her alone with Lincoln.

“I’ll live. This because of me?”

Lincoln smiled at her, and Alice wasn’t sure why. “You know, I’ve never really seen how alike you and Lex are. Guess you’ve rubbed off on one another.” He took a seat beside her.

“Alike how?”

“Well, Lexia is upstairs now, probably staring at Lola as she sleeps, beating herself up for tonight’s events, and all the others she’s decided to take on board as her fault, and you’re down here doing the same.”

“The suits are here for me,” Alice stated, annoyed, even though a part of her knew Lincoln talked a little sense.

“It wasn’t the suits this time,” Lincoln answered. “And if it was, it wouldn’t be your fault. At the end of the day, you didn’t choose to be a hunter, Alice. If this is anyone’s fault, it’s Lucy Hunter’s.”

“Yeah, that crazy bitch is to blame for a lot, but she didn’t make me go off on a bender and attract attention.”

Lincoln chuckled. He got up, tapping her on the knee as he did so. “But you’d not be Alice without the crazy, would you?”

“Thanks… I think,” she muttered.

“Coming?” He offered her a hand.

Alice took it, letting him pull her up. “Where?”

“To check on Lucas, and we’ll have Caden look at you while we’re at it.”

Alice followed him. “Wait. So if it wasn’t the government, who was it?”

“Well, it was in a way I guess,” he answered, looking back. “Sarah sent us some presents.”

“Sarah as in psycho scientist Sarah?”

“Yup.” He smiled.

“What kind of presents?” If it was from Sarah, it wasn’t good. She might have created a cure, and helped bring the compound down, but Alice could never forget that Sarah had helped create the hunters in the first place. Plus, she just didn’t like her much.

“Well, I killed one,” Lincoln said, looking back at her with an ominous smile. “The other was her son, and bodyguard, and some hunter the cure’s failing, like you.”

“Why though?”

“Not sure. She sent a message too, but we’ve been a bit busy with the kids. It can wait.”

Lincoln opened the door to the medical room. Walking in, he stepped aside to let her past. Alice entered. Lucas was on a bed in panther form, Heather next to him holding his tiny paw in her hand. Caden was applying a bandage to another paw, and there was another around the boy’s middle.
